Jugaad in your backyard.

The world has caught on to extreme inventing, or its a parallel development. Either way, it’s good news because it means that if your are serious about inventing as a source of income and or identity there are more learning resources to draw from than you might have imagined. So what is Jugaad?

Jugaad—a Hindi word meaning an innovative fix or an improvised solution. The fix, the invention, is ingenious, and will be testimony to the resourcefulness of the inventor. Basicaly, jugaad solutions are the kind I’ve been providing examples of at this blog. As we know from these pages, invention comes naturally to all of us, so it’s not really surprising when we are told jugaad is a form of ‘innovation’ (meaning invention in these pages) practiced by millions of entrepreneurs. It will also not be surprising, given jugaad is a hindi word, that there’s a lot of it going on in India. The three best known proponents of jugaad are three Indian academics, Navi Radjou, Jaideep Prabhu, and Simone Ahuja. Their book is: Jugaad Innovation: Think Frugal, Be Flexible, and Generate Breakthrough Growth . Since this kind of everyday creativity (see the post about Ruth Richard’s book of the same name) is natural, the jugaad approach to invention also goes by different names in different countries. In USA it’s D-i-Y,  in France its systeme D. Brasil and China have their own words but I can’t remember them. It’s also called Frugal Innovation, by which term Santa Clara University if trying to make a name for itself.

More to come on this page—in time.
